Type Locality and Naming

Himalayas. The type section is at Dabalao to Xialazi peat (elevation 6004 m) in south part of Bolin in Zanda County, southern Xizang. The Xialazi Fm (lower part) was named by Liang Dingyi in 1991.

Synonym: (下拉孜组)


Lithology and Thickness

Two parts of the formation had been divided. Lower part is about 940 m thick, and is composed of grayish green feldspar-quartz sandstone intercalated with minor marl and shale. Upper part is about 100 m thick, and is composed of shallow-marine limestone yielding abundant tetracorals and tabular corals.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

It rests conformably on the feldspar-quartz sandstone, calcareous sandstone intercalated with mudstone of the Dabalao Fm (upper part)

Upper contact

It is conformably overlain by the variegated sandy slate and argillaceous limestone of the Lower Silurian.

Regional extent

The Xialazi Fm is seen only in the type area.

Fossils

This stratigraphic unit yields brachiopods of Rafinesquina-Fascifira subcarinata assemblage and cephalopod Pararaphistoma qualterintum form gracilis at the lower part, and Kenniphyllum-Plasmoporella assemblage of the upper part (Liang, 1991).
